Donald Trump Laughs Off Sidney Powell’s Voter Fraud Claims

Even former President Donald Trump thought Sidney Powell, a lawyer who tried to recall the 2020 vote on his behalf, was spouting claims of voter fraud as “crazy.”

This is according to the executive summary of the January 6 panel of their investigation into the Capitol riot, which it released on Thursday. In the report, the committee detailed how Trump received a call on November 20, 2020 from Powell, a far-right lawyer.

The Jan. 6 panel published testimony from Hope Hicks, Trump’s former White House communications director. Hicks told the panel that as Powell spoke, Trump muted himself. While on mute, he laughed at Powell, telling others in the room: “This is crazy, isn’t it?”

The day before his call to Trump, Powell took the stage at a press conference with Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, spouting wild conspiracy theories.

According to the committee’s report, Powell repeated Trump’s claim that he walked out of that press conference. This includes the baseless claim that there is “tremendous influence of communist money through Venezuela, Cuba, and probably China in interfering with our elections here in the United States.” Additionally, Powell speculated that the voting technology company Dominion Voting Systems was affiliated with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez (who has been dead since 2013), and had something to do with the election.

Two days later, on November 22, 2020, Trump’s team purged Powell from their ranks.

“Sidney Powell practices law on his own. He is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. Nor is he an attorney for the President in his personal capacity,” Trump’s lawyers Giuliani and Jenna Ellis wrote on November 22.

Regarding Powell’s fate, in October 2021, the Daily Beast reported that he was on Trump’s “no-go list”. The Daily Beast spoke to sources who said Powell was put on a list of people to stay away from Trump, and that the former president would not take his calls.

In the meantime, Dominion Voting Systems is suing Powell, Giuliani, and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell for defamation, saying the trio pushed a series of voter fraud claims that hurt its business. Dominion Voting Systems said in January that the billion-dollar lawsuits were unlikely to be resolved because of the “devastating damage” the three caused to the company.

Representatives for Powell and a spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
