Donald Trump is ready to be impeached and end his life “behind bars”, says a Democrat. The January 6 Committee recommended that the Department of Justice indict the former President on four criminal charges over the 2021 Capitol riots.

Today, Representative Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat who served on the House select committee, said Mr Trump would likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Speaking to Yahoo! News’ Skullduggery podcast on Christmas Eve, the Democratic lawmaker said he would be “really surprised” if Attorney General Merrick Garland didn’t indict Trump for his alleged role in the riot.

He added that it was “very clear” that the former President intended to “interfere” with the certification of the election.

“I think it’s very, very important that we establish that it’s not just foot soldiers, but kingpins who are being prosecuted,” Mr Raskin said.

“And it would be wrong to send hundreds of soldiers to jail and leave the very obvious kingpin unprosecuted.”

He added that Mr Trump could spend the rest of his life in prison if he is convicted of the January 6 charges, saying: “There was just deep guilt from the beginning in everything that Donald Trump did.

“I am very serious about him facing the consequences and paying for the cost of his actions.

“He could spend the rest of his misanthropic life behind bars, probably with Secret Service agents.”

Mr Trump criticized the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, after they recommended the Justice Department pursue criminal charges against the former President.

“These are sick people”, he said in a Truth Social video clip.

“These are Marxists. And they are very dangerous and very bad people.”

He also said in the video that “the events of January 6 were not an uprising”, insisting that they were instead “a protest that went tragically out of control.”

He said the committee “has not produced one shred of evidence that I in any way intended or wanted violence in our Capitol”, and claimed it “does not exist because the claim is baseless and a what a lie”.

The committee said its conclusion was that “the main cause of January 6th was one person, former President Donald Trump, followed by many others”.

“None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him,” they added.

Mr Raskin also said on the podcast that he believed the panel was “cautious and conservative” in criminal referrals against Trump.

Those charges include: inciting insurrection, obstruction of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and conspiracy to make a false statement.

The Justice Department did not have to act on the referrals, and Mr Trump has not been charged with a crime.
