Donald Trump Pushes His Own Supporters Over Abortion

Donald Trump blamed the Republican Party’s disappointing midterm performance on the “abortion issue” rather than the failure of his endorsed candidates.

In a post on Truth Social, the former president said it was “not my fault” that the GOP failed to ride the expected “red wave” in November’s elections, while pointing to poor election results among party insiders. who pushed for severe restrictions on abortion after Roe v. Wade.

Many people, including within the GOP, blamed Trump’s MAGA and reelection candidates for the GOP’s failure to regain control of the Senate and only a slim majority in the House.

Democrats have come out heavily on abortion rights after the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, a strategy that some predicted could be a risk as polls suggested the economy and rising inflation levels were voters’ top concerns ahead of the midterm elections.

“It’s not my fault the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the MidTerms. I’m 233-20!,” Trump wrote, referring to the success rate of his midterm endorsements, which include incumbents who are already more favored. win

“It is the ‘abortion issue,’ which has not been properly handled by many Republicans, especially those who strongly insist on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or the Life of the Mother, that have lost a large number of Voters. Also, people who pushed hard, for decades, against abortion, got their request from the US Supreme Court, and simply disappeared, never to be seen again.”

Trump also blamed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his “stupid $’s” for the GOP’s poor midterm results after he pulled funding from key Senate races like New Hampshire and Arizona, if where Trump lost among the candidates.

Trump failed to note in his Jan. 1 Truth Social post that the Supreme Court just voted to overturn Roe v. Wade after filling the bench with his appointments.

Three of the five conservative justices who voted to overturn the landmark abortion decision—Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett—were appointed by the Republican president.

In a statement shortly after SCOTUS voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, Trump took credit for the decision by appointing the judges who reached the majority decision.

“Today’s decision, which is the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation, along with other decisions announced recently, was only possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court,” Trump said. “It is my great honor to do so!”

The statement was seen as a direct appeal to conservative Christian voters, who have become a key demographic during Trump’s presidency.

Trump also failed to mention that some of his endorsed candidates who lost their midterm races—such as Senate candidates Herschel Walker in Georgia and Blake Masters in Arizona—supported the introduction of stricter abortion laws.
