OBITUARY’S DONALD TARDY Explains How DIO Influenced His Drumming

Obituary drummer Donald Tardy has expressed his love of classic rock and metal many times throughout the years. Although in an interview with Loudwire, Tardy revealed that Dio’s 1983 debut album Holy Diver was the turning point in his young drumming career.

Tardy praised Vinny Appice’s delicious drumming throughout the record, saying that Appice’s performance showed him that non-technical playing is “heavier and stronger than any technical drumming”.

“How can I begin to explain what this album did for me and to me?” said Tardy. “I’ve been interested in drums my entire life, from my very first memories as a child. I started playing drums in 1977. Back then, I found many bands and I was always a fan of music, but the drums were always absorbed by my brain

“So, when I heard Holy Diver as a 13-year-old ‘drummer,’ it was for me. This album caught my attention and took me and as I listened to the magical, heavenly, angelic that voice of Dio with the straight, forward, solid perfection played by Vinny Appice on every song and throughout this album this has been my school and Vinny has been my teacher.

“He showed me that basic, tasty and solid is heavier and more powerful than any technical drumming and to this day Holy Diver and Vinny’s performance still hits the nerve like no other album! It is my Bible!”
