After earlier appearances to back off from Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become speaker of the House, Donald Trump is taking credit Saturday for a hard-fought victory by California Republicans.

Trump, who recently said, let’s see what happens as McCarthy loses vote after embarrassing vote, took credit for the big boost.[ing] McCarthy achieved the position of Speaker of the House. Trump preened at Truth Social: Thank you, I did the Country a big favor!

He went on to say that fake news is very good at reporting his valuable help. He posted stories from Fox News, Rupert Murdochs New York Post and far-right media that noted that McCarthy thanked Trump for his support after finally securing a win late Friday following a record 15 votes.

Following a statement from McCarthy to thank President Trump in particular, he posted a video of it and responded: Thank you Kevin. It was my great honor!

As recently as Tuesday, Trump appeared to let McCarthy spin in the wind after the lawmaker lost three votes in the House to become speaker. Asked by NBC News if he would continue to support the Republican lawmaker, Trump responded vaguely: Lets see what happens.

Trump added: I got everybody calling me wanting my support. But let’s see what happens, and all right, I called everyone, wanted my support. That’s all I can say. But well see what happens. Also see how it all works.

McCarthy said that day that Trump reiterated his support.

Trump has reiterated his support; I spoke to him tonight, McCarthy insisted to reporters at the Capitol.

Trump previously urged House Republicans to stand behind McCarthy or risk having a worse speaker.

He apparently made phone calls to House members Friday night, urging them to support McCarthy in what could have been a critical boost.

Following McCarthys 14th failed vote on Friday night, his allies moved to adjourn until Monday. But while the vote to postpone was underway, McCarthy holdout Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) reportedly took a call from Trump urging him to clear a path for McCarthy. Trump also allegedly called Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), urging him to do the same.

That might have been a breakthrough. McCarthys allies learned that his opponents were willing to vote for the present rather than not, and quickly began shifting their votes to keep the House in session.

McCarthy won the 15th vote to become speaker of the House.
