A special grand jury has completed the Trump investigation

The special grand jury has been running for a year and has drawn testimony from some of Trump’s closest allies, including former chief of staff Mark Meadows, attorney Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.).

The panels’ recommendations remain unclear, but McBurney has set a Jan. 24 hearing to consider whether to overturn the panels’ recommendations and findings. Whether any of its key conclusions will be revealed before then is also unclear.

The panel spent months investigating efforts by top Trump allies to appoint GOP activists to pose as presidential electors, even after Trump lost the state. That effort is part of Trump’s strategy to derail the 2020 election when Congress meets to count electoral votes in Jan. 6, 2021.

The special grand jury is also investigating Trumps January 2, 2021 phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who famously asked election officials to find enough votes to overturn his defeat

Several witnesses, including Graham and Meadows, challenged the authority of the special grand juries. But Meadows lost a court battle that reached the South Carolina Supreme Court, and Graham was also required to testify after a legal push that reached the US Supreme Court.

At the same time, Willis has publicly expressed his interest in bringing other key Trump allies before the special grand jury, which has noted deposition requests and subpoenas for figures such as former national security adviser Mike Flynn who lost his own legal battle in Florida against the panel and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Attorney John Eastman, an architect of the Trumps’ stay in power, indicated that he pleaded with the Fifth when appearing before the special grand jury. Georgia Gov. was also ordered. Brian Kemp testified before the panel.

The panels are investigating closely watched efforts by the select committee on Jan. 6 to investigate Trump’s efforts. Raffensperger and his deputy, Gabriel Sterling, testified in June at a public hearing of the select committee, as did two election workers in Georgia who faced threats and abuse after they became the subject of election conspiracies that were boosted by Trump and Giuliani.
