New Garner head football coach Deron Donald spoke to HighSchoolOT following his first meeting with his new players. Donald broke down what his program will look like and his expectations for the kids.
coach ron donald high school sounds good. It sounds like how it is supposed to be, You know, I’m blessed for this opportunity to be a part of such a storied program, not just in North Carolina but in the country, the things that happened here within football program. , but I’m just glad to be a part of, to help it continue in the right direction. You mentioned the story program when the job opened up, Did you like that right away? Absolutely. It’s kind of like a no brainer. You know, when you have an opportunity like that, get a job like that, um, who wouldn’t want to be in a position to be able to play in a program like this and be a leader in a program like this. this. So when a job opens automatically, uh, it’s like, there’s something I really want to look at. Um, so as head coach Andy smith and triple S, um, you’ve had great seasons with those programs and they haven’t had great seasons before you especially at triple S. Um, what is it about you that brings out the best among all players? Well, I think one of the things that I believe in is that everyone, when they are born, they have a purpose and I think there is greatness in everyone. Um, and I think as educators and culture, we have a responsibility to try to harness that greatness. So I’m going to find any way to still be strategic to be creative, to figure that out The way to pull it off. And when young people understand that you have invested in them and your ship is about their lives and their future. Uh they, they work hard, but a lot of times sometimes people, we do it because of the job, it’s not a job, it’s a ministry and it’s all about lives and so when they understand that they’re willing to go through. a brick wall for you, and I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve had the success that we’ve had with others, maybe not succeeding, we’ve been able to do that. What was that to me when your introduction here was somehow player oriented. You mentioned that I don’t know what the system is until, you know, I see you outside, I see what you are good at. You think that, that’s the key, especially focusing on the player first and then going, you need, that’s what we serve, you know their children, young people, so we’re like this. serves. So it’s about them, it’s not about me, I always tell my coaches, we don’t have no egos if your title driven and all that, maybe you can’t build my staff Laurent belongs because it’s about how can we uh find what these young people are doing, how can we find a way for them to reach their full potential? If you have an average player, they should be a great player. If you have a good player, they should be a good player. If you have a good player, must be an elite player when they are part of our tulips. What are some of the values and traits you want to instill in the players? What would a typical garner player do uh, like in the classroom hallways? Well, I think our D cat speaks for himself, respect discipline, commitment, responsibility and toughness. Those are the, uh, the pillars that we are, we lay our foundation on, what we have, um, you know, put our hats on, hang our hats on. So that’s something that you see throughout the building and throughout the weight room and that’s what our Kids and youth understand, that’s what we’re trying to do and if they do those things, the rest will take care of itself. So I know you’ve been up to speed on watching some of their movies. Um, in general, what was kind of your main takeaway from last year’s team and then what were some parts about the team, even though they had a good season that you’re excited to come back to? I think any time you hear the word garden, there’s going to be some talent. So, you know, I understand that they built a south garner. So that kind of takes away from some of the talent pool, but at the end of the day it’s still getting and so there’s going to be people that have been here for years and it’s just a tradition that they want their Children to will play here. So we’ve seen a lot of good things on the field, but there’s still a lot of things that we need to work on and for us to find things that we need to improve on and that’s what we’re going to do as a culture, staff. will focus on and those are the areas that were really hit a little bit in the offseason coach. Thanks, congrats on the job and moving forward. No problem, appreciate it. Thank you
