Donald Trump Was ‘Caught Repeatedly Lying’ During DepositionAttorney

Donald Trump may have seriously damaged his case in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by a woman who accused him of rape by telling “repeated lies” during his deposition, according to to a lawyer.

Katie Phang, legal analyst and MSNBC host, responds to unsealed transcripts of testimony provided by Trump as part of a suit brought by former Elle columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Carroll accused the former president of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in New York in the mid-1990s. Trump has denied the allegation.

Carroll sued Trump for defamation of his character while denying the allegations, including saying in a 2019 interview that he was “not my type.” Trump later repeated the same statements in a statement posted on Truth Social in October 2022, before his deposition took place.

During his testimony, which opened Monday, Trump defended his “not my type” statements while also calling the rape claim from Carroll a “hoax” and his accuser a “whack job” and a “liar.”

Trump has also accused several investigations and inquiries against him of being “frauds,” including Robert Mueller’s Russia probe and the former president’s first impeachment trial. Trump also repeated his false claims of voter fraud, describing mail-in-ballots as a fraud despite admitting that’s how he voted in elections.

On Monday’s episode of Deadline: White House, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace asked Phang, aside from making him “like a jack***,” what was the legal significance of Trump making these comments under oath.

“The legal significance is that he steps here and again,” Phang said. “And most importantly, later in his deposition, he basically denied touching a woman and any part of her body—specifically denying touching a woman on her breast or buttocks or any other sexual part without his permission.

“He said no under oath. The whole world knows that on an Access Hollywood tape, he bragged about how he could get them through the ‘blank,’ and you can do it when you’re a star,” added Phang. “He was caught lying repeatedly throughout the course of this damning videotaped deposition.”

Phang added that Trump’s under-oath testimony will certainly be used against him as when Carroll’s defamation case goes to trial in April as “the more you’re painted as a liar, the more you a liar and a jury is going to determine that.”

Elsewhere, Phang said Trump didn’t help himself either because he was “stupid” enough to not only repeat his “not my type” statement about Carroll at the Truth Social in October, but “stupid step over and over again” during his deposition.

“He will go to trial in April and will most likely not be found liable for the claims brought by [Carroll]and that’s why this video deposition is so important,” Phang added.
