Because we now live in the Land Beyond Parody, the former president* released his education plan in anticipation of the 2024 campaign, and now we all have to pretend to a) take it seriously, and b) know he is all about anything, let alone education. Politico is very good at pretending to be all these things.
The plan, shared in advance with POLITICO, calls for cutting off federal funding for any school or program that includes critical race theory, gender ideology, or other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political to our children. It also called for the opening of civil rights investigations into any school district involved in race-based discrimination, particularly against Asian American students, and pledged to bar boys from women’s sports. The proposals are not only focused on social policy and school curriculum. In a video unveiling the plan, shared by his campaign, Trump also called for significant cuts to administrative staff and the end of teacher tenure and the election of school principals. As the saying goes, personnel is policy and at the end of the day if we have pink haired communists teaching our children we have a big problem, Trump said. We’re at the bottom of the list in education and yet we spend the most, but will be at the top in education wherever you go anywhere in the world.
He is also in favor of the direct election of school principals by the parents of the students this is not a mockery.
Not that we all don’t live in fear these days of pink-haired commies and other Punk Trotskys, but none of us should act like this nonsense has any basis in reality. Gov. Ronald DeSantis is a real threat to public education; he is hard at work destroying it. But this is the former president* trying not to outrun DeSantis but to float past him in hot air. He’s reciting his conjuring words and hoping that it will work the way it did six years ago.
And it might work, because DeSantis’ gifts as a politician have yet to be discovered.
The Ohio legislature, which has been a hothouse for some of the most flamboyant wingnut flora of our time, has gone full zoo recently (which is amusing, I suppose).
At issue are the circumstances under which representatives are allowed to offer amendments from the floor. It’s the typical intramural GOP brawl between the Insane and the Not Entirely Bazats wings of the party. The first wanted to break the speaker’s power to refuse to recognize amendments that he could only see acting. And this is one of the proposed changes that caught my attention.
Two of the proposed rules stick with Edwards. News 5 was sent documents of both, each created by state Rep. Ron Ferguson (R-Wintersville). The first would require a Christian prayer at the beginning of the session. “I thought that was kind of disgusting,” Edwards said. “We have Jews serving in the Legislature. Are we now saying that the rabbis around Columbus or around Ohio are not allowed to come back?”
Democrats were also outraged by this proposal. State representatives Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson), Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus), Munira Yasin Abdullahi (D-Columbus), Anita Somani (D-Dublin) and Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) were all denounced. Ferguson’s effort. Weinstein and Isaacsohn are both Jewish. Abdullahi and Mohamed are Muslims. Somani is Hindu. “This disgraceful amendment is not only unconstitutional, but it is also a slap in the face to the millions of non-Christian Ohioans who call this state their home and help it grow, House Democrats said.
Personally, I’m in favor of giving the speaker the power to applaud anyone who proposes this stupidity to the scaffold on the Capitol lawn. Stop wasting everyone’s time.
Weekly WWOZ Pick To Click: “Golden Limousine” (Golden Dawn Arkestra): Yes, I still love New Orleans.

Weekly Visit To The Path Archives: Here, from 1928, is President Calvin Coolidge, blocking it in the mountains of Virginia. No president in history has looked more foolish in elaborate headgear than Coolidge, and there seems to be a camera almost always around when he’s wearing it. Here he is in what looks like the size of a radio telescope. First lady Grace Coolidge wears one of those Roaring ’20s bucket items. History is beautiful.
The season starts this weekend, and Sam is still at home where he belongs. The Dubs have slipped down to Division 2, which is strange, but they will be seen in time for the All Ireland. The Kingdom kick off on Sunday against Donegal. A number of players from the 2022 champs will miss out on action this week due to commitments with their home clubs. However, it would be good to run some of the bench players.
Discovery Corner: Someone found something really old in Belgium. From IFLScience:
The piece, originally part of a dodecahedron measuring 5-6 centimeters (22.36 inches) in size, shows signs of repair in the past, with local archaeologists at the Flanders Heritage Agency suggesting it was may have been broken in some kind of ancient ritual. The Roman dodecahedra is something of an enigma: more than 100 such artifacts have been found across Europe over the past few centuries, each of them carefully placed into this perfect 12-sided polyhedra. Each face of the bronze dodecahedra has a small hole in the middle, though none is as big as the other, and each vertex is decorated with a small bauble although other than that, the little doodads seem to have no distinctive features. score.
We can assume that they must have been important, at least to some of their owners, since some were found in coin hoards and the new example despite hardly showing signs of the kind of wear and tear you might expect in almost two millennia of history. But the simple truth is that no one knows what the Roman dodecahedra were actually used for. In fact, if it weren’t for the fact that hundreds of them have been discovered, you wouldn’t know they existed at all, because no record of them has ever been found in contemporary art or writing.

I think they are the tokens in ancient board games. Or some strange type of Roman marbles, or jacks. In any event, I think they have something to do with children. They are like toys to me. And, anyway, look what we found!
Hey, Ars Technica, is it a good day for dinosaur news? It’s always a good day for dinosaur news!
Borealopelta markmitchelli found its way back into sunlight in 2017, millions of years after it died. This armored dinosaur is so well preserved that we can see what it looked like in life. Almost the entire skin of the animal, the armor covering its skin, the spikes on its side, most of its body and legs, even its face survived fossilization. This is, according to Dr. Donald Henderson, curator of dinosaurs at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, a one-in-a-billion find. Beyond its remarkable preservation, this dinosaur is an important key to understanding aspects of Early Cretaceous ecology, and it shows how this species might have lived within its environment. Since the discovery of its remains, scientists have studied its anatomy, its armor, and even what it ate in its final days, uncovering new and unexpected insights into an animal that disappeared around 100 million years ago. It may be their first visit to a Suncor mine, but the rock formations produced by the mine are well known to Henderson and Tanke. This ancient marine environment has produced fossils of plesiosaurs and dolphin-like ichthyosaurs in other locations, so researchers expect any new find to be similar. Our thinking is biased, explains Henderson. Everyone who looked at it thought, It’s a plesiosaur flipper! Because what else could it be? When you look at the bones, it doesn’t make sense as a plesiosaur. It’s amazing how your thought process wants you to see something. Eventually you have to admit: It’s not there.
They never cease to amaze us. They used to live like that to please us now.
I’ll be back on Monday to see what’s going on among the stalactites that now reside in the House of Representatives. Be nice and play nice, bastards. Stay above the snake-line, wear a damn mask, and take damn shots especially the damn boosters. And take a minute this weekend for the people of Ukraine as winter really sets in, and for the communities in California that are being bled by this country’s insane attachment to our guns, God help us all.
