Republicans are hoping Donald Trump will die before he ruins 2024 for them, but he clearly won’t.

On Monday, the Atlantic’s McKay Coppins published a piece about how the top minds of the Republican Party are approaching the problem of having voters who might renominate Donald Trump for president in 2024. Trump, you see, lost in the 2020 presidential election and has been largely responsible for dozens of avoidable down-ballot GOP losses in federal and statewide races in 2018 and 2022, as well. The technical phrase that political scientists use for what Trump is, at this point, is an anchor that has dragged the Republican brand into the darkest regions of hell.

Other elected officials and potential GOP candidates who make this point, however, are liable to be targeted by former presidents who have many remaining hardcore supporters, who despite not being enough to win a majority races in the general election, have proven themselves to be at least sufficient to determine the results of the primary parties. It’s a fun little Catch-22 situation for them.

According to Coppins, the tactical approach adopted by many disgruntled officials was to hope that God would resolve the problem in their favor, by inflicting pain:

In his recent book Thank You for Your Servitude, my colleague Mark Leibovich quotes a former Republican representative who bluntly summed up his party’s plan for dealing with Trump: Just waiting for him to die. As it turns out, this is not a common sentiment. In my conversations with Republicans, I’ve heard repeatedly that the least disruptive path to removing Trump, however brutal, may be to wait for his expiration.

Ha! Good luck with that. Consider this:

Donald Trump has a Filet-O-Fishcentered diet, exercises only by playing golf, and employs some of the least trustworthy-looking doctors associated with the medical profession.

He didn’t take the threat of COVID seriously and actually got COVID himself before the last election.

He is 76 years old.

However, he fully recovered from COVID and has had no known health problems since then. He looks fine. (He looks weaker than the Democrats likely to nominate in 2024, for one.)

Have you ever seen Velveeta go bad? No, because it’s not real food. The same is true of Donald Trump and being a man.
