Trump Lawyer in Mar-a-Lago Search Appears Before Grand Jury

Before the lawsuit was filed and while the investigation was underway, the attorney generals office served subpoenas on Mr. Trump seeking the documents, saying their response was not fully forthcoming. A judge agreed, prompting Ms. Habba, an attorney in the case, to file an affidavit saying he searched Mar-a-Lago for the files Ms. James and nothing.

In that affidavit, he cited a sweep of the premises the FBI discovered, while executing its search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, in possession of classified documents.

On May 5, 2022, I diligently searched respondents’ personal office located at Mar-a-Lago, including all desks, drawers, file cabinets, etc., wrote Ms. Habba in the affidavit. I could not find any documents responding to the subpoena that had not yet been produced.

He added that he located his Mar-a-Lago residence and his club in Bedminster, NJ, as well as his office there.

Late last year, the Justice Department subpoenaed several people around Mr. Trump who may have information related to the documents case, according to three people briefed on the matter.

In some cases, the Justice Department has sought to speak with people who have told Mr. Trump he must comply with repeated requests by the National Archives.

One is Alex Cannon, a lawyer who used to work for Mr. Trump and contacted the archive as it tried to retrieve several boxes of material. After the archive recovered the initial 15 boxes, Mr. Trump told Mr. Cannon to relay that he had returned them all, according to a person briefed on the matter. Mr. refused. Cannon.
