These three things could bury Donald Trump in 2024

The election of staunch election denier Kristina Karamo as Michigan’s GOP chair this past weekend sent a clear message, the New Republic reports. Donald Trump is still in charge of the Republican party.

The fact that the former president endorsed another candidate in the 10-person field doesn’t matter, says writer Michael Tomasky. Because all 10 candidates are Trump fans.

In a state where Democrats are in control, holding both chambers of the state legislature and the governorship, Republicans have reacted by moving more toward the extremes, Tomasky said.

And he suggested that was evidence that Trump still rules the roost, despite the many investigations that continue against him.

“With every passing week, the feeling grew that sooner or later, some piece of the law or other was likely to catch up with him; that he might at last tempt fate once too many times, and even the protection that carapace of the presidency. I cannot protect him. In fact, it is precisely because he became president that the system finally rose to hold him to some sort of account (we hope),” Tomasky wrote.

“However, none of this matters. Cable news spends a lot of time thinking about this, but it’s pretty obvious why. Trump has emboldened a neo-fascist, white ethnonationalist segment of the population that will stick with him in almost anything because he identified and gave voice to their grievances.”

And Tomasky says only three things can change that.

Religious right leaders are fighting Trump. Opposing candidates stopped their individual scraps and united behind an anti-Trump presidential hopeful. An accusation came down that the show’s polls would actually hurt him in a general election, and Trump-supporting networks like Fox accepted the writing on the wall.

“None of these three scenarios is impossible,” Tomasky said. “But nothing is likely, because these people are not leaders, they are followers. They are afraid of Trump’s voters, and they are afraid of Trump himself – of the chaos he can create either with a third-party candidacy. or simply by attacking the GOP nominee and the entire nomination process as corrupt.

“As long as Trump leads the primary polls by double digits, the Falwells won’t come out against him. Party chair and longtime MAGA sycophant Ronna McDaniel won’t pull any punches to force unity on behind an anti-Trump. And Rupert Murdoch won’t stand either.

“As we learned last week with the Dominion Voting Systems showdown, Foxers are afraid they’ll lose audience share to Newsmax, so they’re going to handle Trump very carefully.”
