Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s proposal for a mandatory competency test for politicians over 75 has gained the support of former President and fellow Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Trump, 76, posted on Truth Social – the social media service he launched a year ago – that anyone running for president must agree to take a mental competency and physical fitness test at the same time as -announcement of a campaign.
“Being an outstanding president requires great mental acuity and physical stamina,” Trump said. “If you don’t have these qualities or attributes, you probably won’t succeed.”
Haley, 51, proposed mandatory aptitude tests for politicians over 75 as she announced her presidential campaign Feb. 15 in Charleston.
If enacted immediately, the measure would require Trump, President Joe Biden (80), 16 US Senators including 10 Democrats, four Republicans and independents Bernie Sanders (81) and Angus King (78) to take the tests in thinking ability.
Haley and Trump are two of seven declared candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. The others are former Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton, former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Perry Johnson, former Cranston, RI mayor Steve Laffey and businessmen Vivek Ramaswamy and Rollan Roberts II.
The Republican nominee for president will be chosen at the 2024 Republican National Convention scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee.
How delegates to the convention vote is determined by primaries held in each state, Washington, DC and the five United States territories. The date of South Carolina’s primary has not yet been determined but will likely take place in February 2024.
