Michelle Obama said she started “sobbing” the moment she boarded the Air Force One flight.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed that she sobbed for half an hour after leaving the White House for the last time on the day of US President Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017.

Mrs Obama reflects on her husband, former US President Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House, on ‘Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast’. She spoke of what it was like to leave their family home after eight years and the resentment she felt at Mr Trump’s tenure.

“After the inauguration – and we know whose inauguration we’re in – that day is very emotional for so many different reasons. We’re leaving the house we’ve lived in for eight years, the only house we’ve ever known our children,” he explained on the podcast.

Mrs. Obama continued, “They remember Chicago but they spent more time in the White House than anywhere else, so we said goodbye to the staff and all the people who helped raise them.”

He also mentioned the “tears” he had on leaving the White House and then moved on to talk about Mr Trump’s inauguration and the lack of diversity he saw there. “There were tears, there was such emotion. To sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display. There was no diversity, no color on that stage. There was no reflection of the broader meaning of America,” he added.

He then admitted that he started “sobbing” as soon as he boarded the Air Force One flight. “When those doors closed, I cried for 30 minutes of straight, uncontrollable sobbing, because that’s how we’ve handled it for eight years,” the former First Lady recalled.

Mrs Obama also poked fun at Mr Trump over how many people attended his inauguration, which has long been a source of controversy for his administration. It is claimed that the turnout at the inauguration was the highest ever. “You walk through the Capitol, you wave goodbye, you get on Marine One, and you get on your last flight that flies through the Capitol. Where there aren’t many people there, we’ve seen that,” he added.
