‘Donald Trump is wrong’; Mike Pence served up his sharpest criticism of his former boss, the president, as he laid the groundwork for a reelection bid.

The former vice president chose a high-profile audience for his attack on Mr Trump. The annual Gridiron Club Dinner — an institution more than a century old — is considered a gathering of some of the most influential people in Washington, from lawmakers to journalists and other public figures.

Mr Trump has already declared a comeback bid for the White House in 2024, and in his speech on Saturday, Mr Pence indicated his own interest in running as well.

“With all my heart, I would without a doubt support the Republican nominee for president in 2024 … if it were me,” Mr Pence said, laughing.

In his remarks, he expressed gratitude for the actions of law enforcement who defended the Capitol after Mr Trump’s supporters attacked the building.
