“History Will Hold Donald Trump Accountable,” Pence said

Former Vice President Mike Pence made some of his sharpest comments yet about the turmoil in the Capitol on Jan. 6, distancing himself from former President Donald Trump and teasing, once again, a potential 2024 White House run.

“President Trump is wrong,” Pence said Saturday at the Gridiron Dinner, an annual event held for politicians and journalists, in Washington, DC “I have no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words put my family and everyone in the Capitol at risk that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.

“The American people have a right to know what happened at the Capitol on January 6th,” Pence added. “Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace, and it mocks decency to show it in any way.”

Aside from attacking the Capitol, the former vice president also took aim at classified documents found at Trump’s Florida estate—and tried to make a joke. “I read that some of the classified documents that they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually attached to the president’s Bible,” Pence said. “Which proves he had no idea they were there.”

While Trump has already declared that he will run for president in 2024, Pence has yet to formally do so. However, he indicated his intentions on Saturday night. “With all my heart, I will without a doubt support the Republican nominee for president in 2024,” he said. “If it’s me.”

Although Pence has taken definite steps away from Trump, some politicians and others in the media have argued that he is taking too long.

Ritchie Torres: “Mike Pence, whose life was threatened on January 6 by the MAGA extremists he enabled for four years, says history will hold Donald Trump accountable for his election denial. History has no kind words for a sycophant like Mike Pence who dutifully helped and agreed with Trump.

“Where is this courage after January 6? For the months after that? The years now after this?” Lincoln Project senior advisor Tara Setmayer said on “The Saturday/Sunday Show” on Sunday. “Anybody else with a spine spoke up immediately and led the charge against Donald Trump… And then all of a sudden, now [Pence] there’s this sanctimonious, powerful reaction to Donald Trump.”

Pence, who is religious and was once called by the Human Rights Campaign “the worst vice president for LGBTQ people,” criticized the only openly gay Cabinet member in US history, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and may have gone too far the jokes. He said that, despite all the travel issues in the country, Buttigieg took “maternity leave” after adopting the newborn twins with his wife.

Pence said: “Pete is the only person in the history of mankind to have a child and everyone else experiences post-partum depression.”
