Statement from Mayor Donald Shaw on the passing of NJ Senator Ronald Rice

[ad_1]

“It is with heavy hearts that we learn of the passing of New Jersey Senator Ronald Rice, the longest serving Black lawmaker in state history.

Senator Rice is a trailblazer when it comes to improving social justice and has taken the lead on important issues that have affected communities like Roselle, including police reform and socioeconomic inequality.

He famously founded and chaired the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus for 18 years, paving the way for many black legislators across the state when he was first elected to serve in Newark in 1981.

On behalf of the Borough Council, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Senator Rice, along with all members of the community who were affected by his service and compassion. He will be remembered as someone who was always ready to help his subjects and young leaders.”
