John Oliver got a kick out of a video Donald Trump posted this week aimed at farmers.
On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, the HBO late-night host showed part of a campaign video Trump shared Friday in which he shared the work he did on behalf of farmers while he was president.
In the video, Trump said (in part): “I made the farmers happy and rich again, and they’re doing an amazing job. And you know what? Someday it’s going to be time for them to leave this beautiful Earth this, and they can leave their farm tax-free to their children.
“I removed the death tax from farms so that when you pass away thinking you love your children, you can leave them to them and they don’t have to pay taxes.
“But if you don’t love your children very much — and there are some people that don’t, and maybe deservedly — it won’t matter because honestly, you shouldn’t leave him anything. Thanks a lot. Be happy.” (Watch the actual clip below, and keep reading to see Oliver’s response.)
“I mean, he got it anyway,” Oliver replied. “He still got it, and by ‘it,’ I mean, whatever it was that was deeply wrong with his brain.”
Oliver attributed the quotes about “if you don’t love your children” to Trump’s own offspring.
“Do you know how much you have to hate your kids to be distracted by that thought in the middle of a political speech?” he said, and then thought of his own example: “We should have pulled the troops out of the region sooner. Speaking of regrets not pulling out earlier: Don Jr.
