McCarthy pushes back against Trump’s calls for protests: We want silence there

The former president of Truth Social called on his followers to Protest, take back our country, when attacking the investigation and its chief investigator on Saturday. But the top House Republican sought to soften Trumps words, in a throwback to a frequent GOP tactic during his four years in the White House, suggesting he may have intended to educate people about the Bragg’s action.

I think President Trump, if you’ve talked to him, doesn’t believe that either. I think the thing you can misinterpret when President Trump speaks and someone says they can protest, he’s probably referring to my tweet: educate people about what’s going on. He doesn’t speak in a hurtful way, and no one should.

However, McCarthy said in a follow-up question that he had not spoken to Trump, but that he had spoken to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chair of the House Judiciary Committee and its weaponization subpanel.

But not everyone agreed with McCarthy.

Just steps away from the stage where McCarthy and other members of the leadership argued against the protests, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) told reporters that people have a right to protest, though she denounced any potential political violence in reaction to a possible Trump impeachment.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with calling protests. Americans have the right to assemble, the right to protest. And that is an important constitutional right. And he doesn’t have to say peaceful to mean peaceful. Of course, he meant peaceful, Greene told reporters. Of course, President Trump means peaceful protest.

Greene, an ardent Trump loyalist who supported McCarthy during his speakership race, attacked both the probe as corrupt and a witch, while comparing it to what was happening in communist countries.

And he also defended the response of California Republicans when asked directly about it, saying that while people have a right to choose, he said the same thing as McCarthy. (Greene noted that he will not be going to New York to protest, instead planning to go to Trumps rally in Waco, Texas, later this month.)

Trump’s latest protest statements are reminiscent of the chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when he encouraged followers to turn out to protest the results of the presidential election.

However, Republicans appear to agree that they oppose Braggs’ efforts, with McCarthy issuing various tweets over the past two days promising to have relevant committees investigate whether the federal funds are being used to facilitate the perversion of justice by Soros-backed DAs across the country, referring to billionaire liberal donor George Soros.

NBC News reported Friday that law enforcement and security agencies at various levels of government were preparing for the possibility of an indictment earlier this week, including taking security precautions. in the event of a violent explosion.

When pressed if the said funds were really being used that way, he said he did not know but he planned to investigate the matter to find out.

I don’t know, did you read my tweet? McCarthy asked a reporter asking where he believed the funds were coming from. I said I have to investigate. So I have no answers.

When asked if there was any evidence available to the DA that could convince him that charges were necessary, McCarthy deflected by hammering the DA as politically motivated. And he also argued that Trump, if he is ultimately indicted, is not barred from running for president under the Constitution when asked if it is appropriate for him to continue campaigning.

And there could be more action coming from the new majority in the coming days.

I spoke with Chairman Jim Jordan today. I think you will see action tomorrow, McCarthy said.
