As Americans watched with anticipation the criminal indictment of former President Donald Trump, one man carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Alvin Bragg, Manhattan’s first Black district attorney, has already faced a bomb threat, political attacks, and a demand by Republican leaders in Congress to testify on Capitol Hill about why he is going after Trump.

The former president faces charges related to alleged hush payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and campaign finance violations.

This is the first time that a sitting or past US president has faced criminal charges.

A man of few words, Bragg often lets his work do the talking.

When pressed about the threat of protests and violence surrounding Trump’s impeachment and verbal intimidation by GOP House leaders, Bragg deferred to a spokesperson.

We will not be intimidated by attempts to undermine the process of justice, nor will we allow baseless accusations to prevent us from fairly applying the law, Bragg said through a spokesman.

Bragg, 49, maintains that no one is above the law, and that everyone receives equal treatment.

When Republicans sent a letter demanding Braggs appear before Congress, he was unstoppable.

Your letter is an unprecedented inquiry into a pending local prosecution, Bragg wrote in response to a letter from GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio, James Comer of Kentucky, and Bryan Steil of Wisconsin.

Republicans incredulously claimed that Braggs’ prosecution of Trump was an attempt to interfere in the 2024 presidential election.

Trump is currently the leading GOP candidate for president.

The letter comes just after Donald Trump made false hopes that he would be arrested the next day and his lawyers reportedly urged you to intervene, Braggs’ letter continued.

Further, the letter requests are an unlawful intrusion on New York’s sovereignty, Braggs general counsel Leslie Dubeck said.

Manhattan’s 37th district attorney-elect, Bragg grew up in Harlem.

He earned an AB from Harvard University, a JD from Harvard Law School, and clerked for Judge Robert P. Patterson Jr. in the Southern District of New York.

A former member of the Board of Directors of the New York Urban League and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Bragg once served as a Sunday school teacher at his church in New York.

According to his official bio, prior to his 2021 election as Manhattan district attorney, Bragg served as Assistant Attorney General (AG) in the New York State Attorney Generals Office and as Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

In these roles, Bragg handled a wide range of criminal cases, including armed robbery, assault, firearm possession, witness tampering, narcotics and firearms trafficking, wage and hour violations, public corruption, money laundering, and antitrust violations.

He left the State AGs Office as Chief Deputy Attorney General, overseeing more than 1,500 people, a budget of $225 million, and offices of criminal and civil investigation and prosecution, including health care fraud, public corruption, narcotics trafficking, wage-and-hour investigations, tenant harassment, and securities fraud.

Bragg also oversaw the Attorney Generals’ 2022 trial against the Trump Foundation and served as the first Chief of a special unit that investigated deaths caused by police conduct.
