‘I Used To Have Stressful Dreams’

According to a PEOPLE report, star Donald Glover recently revealed that he experienced imposter syndrome during his work on 30 Rock. While chatting with GQ for their Global Creativity Awards issue, the musician reflected on working as a writer on the popular NBC sitcom after college. “It really didn’t feel like I was supposed to be there,” Glover said.

The actor then went into detail about his experience, stating that he was working as a resident assistant (RA) in a New York City University dorm when he was hired as a writer for 30 Rock. At the time, Glover was 23 years old.

He says, “I have a stress dream every night where I do cartwheels on top of a New York skyscraper with other writers watching me.”

The Atlanta star also noted that she was hired for the sitcom as part of a diversity initiative at NBC. Glover said, “There’s no animosity between us or anything like that, but [Tina Fey] he said to himself…. It’s a difference thing.”

The comedian ultimately stayed on as a writer for the show for three seasons. 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan also credited Glover’s work on the series for the success of her character, Tracy Jordan.

Morgan told GQ, “When I first read what he wrote on 30 Rock, I was like, ‘He’s got it.’ The stuff he wrote for me was so funny. He nominated me …twice!”

Glover also mentioned that before he got his job on 30 Rock, the position was between him and Black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

He said, “I didn’t know it was between me and him until later. He hit me one day and I was like, ‘I hate you for years!’ “

Since the end of his Atlanta series, Glover has been working on various projects for his new production company Gilga. While speaking about his new business venture, Glover compared Gilga to the upscale supermarket chain Erewhon.

He said, “Gilga is like Erewhon for culture. I want to work with the best people in every medium. To work towards sustainable output.”

Glover added, “The culture we get from our phones is not high quality. It can be really good sometimes. And fun. But it’s not necessarily high quality. Gilga is the filter for all of that.”

One of Gilga’s projects is the highly anticipated short film created by Malia Obama, which Glover is directing.

Reflecting on his experience working with Obama, Glover said, “The first thing we did was talk about the fact that he only gets to do this once. You’re Obama’s son. So if you do something bad movie, it’s next. you’re around.”
