The DOJ is also investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents after leaving the White House, with both department probes being led by special counsel Jack Smith. It was later reported that the government had previously demanded that the former president’s team hand over all classified documents Trump had, which they allegedly failed to do on multiple occasions.

Within the past week, The New York Times reported that Smith’s investigation had zeroed in on a map contained in a cache of classified documents, which reportedly featured sensitive intelligence information. Witnesses reportedly testified that Trump showed this map to numerous staff and guests at Mar-a-Lago.

In a tweet from Friday, Mary Trump, the former president’s niece and an outspoken critic of his political actions, explained that the development about this map increases the possibility that Trump will face a conviction as a result of Smith’s investigation. He cited analysis from Nicole Wallace, a legal expert for MSNBC, who said Trump’s alleged sharing of a map he was “not authorized to have” would constitute a strict violation of the Espionage Act.

“If you need some good news, there’s a chance Donald Trump could be indicted for espionage,” the former president’s nephew tweeted. “Newly reported information shows that Jack Smith zeroed in on the kind of documents that Donald illegally removed from the White House–and then refused to return–including a classified map.”

He continued: “Recently, it was reported that Donald’s aides were questioned about this map before a criminal grand jury. This adds a new level of seriousness to Donald’s case because it potentially gives prosecutors of physical evidence of his crimes: a proverbial smoking gun . That is, the very real possibility that Donald will not only be charged but found guilty of a crime has increased.”

Trump has yet to comment on the allegations surrounding this map, but has often spoken out against Smith’s investigation, and all others against him, as “politically motivated” and unjust.
