Donald Trump returned to Instagram on Tuesday, posting for the first time since 5 January 2021, the day before the former US president instigated a deadly attack on Congress that led to his suspension from the main social media platform.

Trump, who is now running to regain the White House, used his return to Instagram to promote a second edition of his digital trading cards, a project that was widely mocked when he announced it in December but that one edition sold out. of 44,000 in less than a day, earning $4.5m.

Trump has enjoyed a fundraising boost this month, centered on his criminal indictment in New York on 34 counts of falsifying business records, all related to his hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, an adult movie star claiming a relationship.

Instagram and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, lifted its ban on Trump in January. Metas president of global affairs, former British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, said there would be new guardrails in place to prevent repeat offences.

Should Mr Trump post further offending content, Clegg said, the content would be removed and he would be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the offence.

On Tuesday, Trump’s first Instagram post announced the second series of cards along with an image of him holding the Liberty Bell against a sunset and the Stars and Stripes.

In his second post, a photo of himself as a superhero in red spandex and wearing a US flag as a cape, Trump wrote: I hope everyone notices, and I’m sure Fake News, that I leave the price of Trading Card. same as last time.

He also said he could raise the price HIGHER, and I believe it would still sell, with more money coming my way, but I chose not to. NO NICE GUY GIVE ME CREDIT?

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, lifted its Trump ban in November. Trump has yet to return, instead using Truth Social, the platform he set up after January 6.

As well as the New York indictment, Trump faces legal jeopardy over the events of January 6, his subversion of the election, his handling of classified material, his businesses and rape allegations.

Denying all wrongdoing, he remains the clear frontrunner in the polls regarding the Republican nomination for president.

Trump’s last Instagram post before his ban was an announcement of his speech near the White House on January 6, 2021.

A House committee showed January 6 that Trump knew members of the crowd were armed, but still told supporters to march on the Capitol and fight like hell to overturn his election defeat.
