DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS, Fla. — With Former President Donald Trump arriving the same night as the River Districts Music Walk event, downtown Fort Myers is expected to be packed, with very little parking.
Fort Myers Police will have extra personnel for the many events planned throughout the day and will have additional streets closed near the Caloosa Sound Convention Center, where Trump will be.
Trump is the headliner for a Lee County GOP fundraising dinner. Two GOP congressmen are also speaking, Byron Donalds and Greg Steube. The dinner event is sold out, but many plan to go downtown with a chance to see the former president.
We think it’s super! We need Trump, say Bill and Karen Agenter. The couple, who live in Cape Coral, said they were downtown Friday. Parking is terrible, but we are always early in everything we do.
Florida Republican leaders like Rep. Spencer Roach said they don’t expect Trump to bring his manners to the dinner table. He expects some shade from Gov. Ron DeSantis, during Trump’s speech.
I can promise you that the former president will talk about the 2024 race, Roach said. I expect him to throw a couple at the governor that he has not been shy about criticizing Gov. DeSantis, who tells me he feels threatened.
Some Republicans feel if Governor Ron DeSantis also decides to run in the 2024 election, it will cause some division in the party and be a topic for speakers at the event.
The Edison Awards also take place on Friday. Road closures will become routine for the Music Walk, which starts at 6 pm.
Police said several additional streets around the convention center may be closed for the GOP fundraiser, around 6 p.m.
