UPDATE: Dean Holland sadly dies following fall on Donald today – Read more here

Monday’s Victorian meeting at Donald was abandoned after a race following a fall that resulted in one jockey being taken to hospital in Melbourne with ‘critical’ injuries.

Dean Holland was seriously injured after his mount Headingley went down in the Leading Teams 3YO Maiden Plate which started on the card.

Alana Kelly was also involved in a fall after her mount Time To Rumble was dropped by Headingley, who fell shortly after turning for home in the 1000-metre steeplechase, but she quickly got back on her feet with Holland the subject of the on-course treatment by paramedics before the aircraft arrived.

“Dean Holland will be flown to Melbourne. The injuries are critical. Further updates as advised,” the Victorian Jockeys’ Association said in a brief statement just over an hour after the fall.

The meeting was officially abandoned by ‘steward’ order’ at 2:39 with chief steward Ray Livingstone telling Racing.com it was a decision supported by the participants.

“Obviously, we had a serious crash in the first race and Dean Holland is undergoing treatment as we speak,” Livingstone said.

“It was the stewards’ decision to leave the meeting bearing in mind the nature of the events.

“We felt it was not prudent to continue the meeting, so the decision we made to abandon (the meeting), which I must say, was met with unanimous agreement by the riders.”
