Former President Donald Trump believes that Ron DeSantis’ exploration of a presidential “exploratory committee” is a sign that the Florida Governor is worried about 2024.
“He’s forming an exploratory committee to find out well that’s a big step because he said he wasn’t looking at committees. Now he’s looking at committees. Its amazing what being 40 down does,” Trump said on the War podcast Steve Bannon’s room on Saturday. “Donors are largely abandoning him now.”
Trump also repeated his familiar narrative about his pivotal 2018 endorsement of DeSantis, and subsequent frustration with the Florida Governor’s apparent political ambitions.
“DeSantis failed miserably. Ron De-sanctimonious,” Trump said, as transcribed by Fox Business.
“It’s always bad. You are endorsing someone. He is dead. His political career is over. He will look for a job. Hell be lucky to get a job. Approached me, asking for an endorsement. I give it to him. He ends up winning the election, winning the nomination, winning the election by numbers you wouldn’t believe. I mean, he’s gone so far that he’s gone, and then they yell at him a few years later, when are you going to run against the president? Oh, I have no comment. No comment means the answer is yes.”
NBC News is reporting that the moves are being made over the next few weeks, with an exploratory committee actually being explored.
Trump’s comments come as DeSantis appears to be dealing with donor attrition and less than optimal polls.
On Monday and Tuesday, an Emerson Collegepoll showed Donald Trump in the field consolidating Republican support in a potential presidential race, with 62% of voters polling the former President’s choice.
DeSantis was 46 points behind in second place, garnering 16% support in his worst showing of any national survey of the 2024 field in recent memory.
The Emerson poll was more negative for DeSantis than the FiveThirtyEightaverage of polls, reflecting the Trump aggregate trend. The former President leads DeSantis 51% to 24% in the average, with Pence at 6% and Nikki Haley at 4%.
