Former US president Donald Trump said he cut short a trip to Ireland so he could return to face his accuser in a civil rape case in New York, which he described as a political attack.

Mr Trump left Shannon Airport at around 5.30pm on Thursday after arriving in Ireland a day earlier.

He said he was likely to attend the civil hearing as he spoke to reporters while playing golf at his resort outside the village of Doonbeg, Co Clare.

His visit to Scotland and Ireland coincides with the second week of a civil trial in Manhattan over accusations, which Mr Trump denies, that he raped former E magazine columnist Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room. in 1996.

Speaking to reporters before leaving, Mr Trump said he had been falsely accused.
