What the E. Jean Carroll case verdict means for Donald Trump in the 2024 election

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — On Tuesday, a New York City jury found former President Donald Trump liable in a civil lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll.

The verdict has legal and political implications for the former president.

The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. After the verdict, Trump said on social media that he had no idea who this woman was and that she was a witch.

Former President Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll.

“The jury was specifically not asked for a certain amount and they found that the former President was responsible for sexually abusing her,” said Amato Sanita, a lawyer.

Carroll’s lawyers tried to paint this attack as a pattern of behavior but Trump’s lawyers said Carrol was trying to profit from a false story and questioned his memory.

Trump is fighting this case along with others ahead of his 2024 presidential run.

“It’s not just your case, you have other cases now. Trump has been accused of business fraud, there’s been talk of using campaign money and when you see things together, the whole, what does it mean move forward?” said Dr. Donna Patterson, of Delaware State University.

The election is still a year away and Patterson, the Chair of the Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy at Delaware State, said time will tell going forward how it will affect poll numbers and who will ultimately support him, apart from his core base.

“What does this mean, what does this mean for moderate Republicans, Independents and others? Will they be willing to go with Trump and what does that mean as the race progresses through the rest of 2023 and into 2024 in rules of opponents?” said Dr. Patterson.

said Dr. Patterson said this ruling could also change the scope of women voters.

“I think the most immediate thing we’re going to see is women voters who have been assaulted or sexually harassed at work, what does that mean?” said Dr. Patterson.

Trump did not take the stand but the jury watched his videotaped deposition and the Access Hollywood tape that was made public before the 2016 election.
