E. Jean Carroll May Sue Trump for Third Time After Nasty Comments on CNN

When former President Donald J. Trump inveighed against E. Jean Carroll on CNN Wednesday night, at least one person wasn’t watching: Ms. Carroll.

She was asleep and didn’t learn about his comments calling her claim of a decades-old sexual assault fake and a made-up story until Thursday morning, when her attorney sent the him a transcript, he said.

Mr. Trump, in response to questions from a CNN moderator about the Manhattan jury’s verdict on Tuesday, called Ms. Carroll a wack job and said his civil trial was a rigged deal. The audience was drawn mainly from Republican groups, and his comments drew applause and laughter.

Ms. Carroll, 79, is now weighing whether to file a new defamation suit against Mr. Trump, said his lawyer, Roberta A. Kaplan. In addition to the case that ended on Tuesday, Ms. Carroll has a previous defamation lawsuit against Mr. Trump, 76, that is still pending. Mr. Trump argued in that case that he could not be sued because he made those comments in his official capacity as president.

Ms. clarified Carroll in the interview that despite the ridicule of Mr. Trump saw the jury’s verdict this week as vindication of her account that he sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s, something she has repeatedly and vehemently denied.

In an extensive interview, Ms. Carroll, along with his lawyers, why he believes the jury found Mr. Trump for sexually abusing her but not for raping her, as she has long claimed; how he perceived the aggressiveness of Mr.’s cross-examination. Tacopina; why she didn’t scream when Mr. Trump hit her; and the rituals he and his lawyers performed each day of the two-week trial.

He made it clear that he respected the jurors of six men and three women who the judge kept anonymous and who, he said, remained a puzzle to him.

It’s like Saturday Night Mystery Theater every time they come in, said Ms. Carroll. I studied their faces and they were as dead as nine statues. She added: Never cracked a smile, never raised an eyebrow, never batted a left eyelash.

Those jurors parsed the evidence and testimony of Ms. Carroll and 10 other witnesses who called him before sentencing in less than three hours.

Ms. Carroll, in the interview, blamed himself for their decision to find Mr. Trump to be held liable for sexually assaulting her but not for rape.

I did not make myself clear when I was testifying, said Ms. Carroll.

Under New York law, according to Ms.’s lawyer. Carrolls, Ms. Kaplan, genital penetration must occur for rape to occur. Ms. testified Carroll that after he was brought by Mr. Trump in the Bergdorfs lingerie department and in a dressing room, he pushed her against the wall and inserted his fingers and then his penis into her penis.

During the trial, Ms. Carroll, he tried to stay away from social media. At night, he said, he was in bed by 7, and every morning, his stylist visited and prayed with him, even though Ms. Carroll that he is not a religious person.

That became the ritual, said Ms. Carroll.

As for Ms. Carroll, he says he’s ready to move forward with his personal life maybe even start dating again.

I wasn’t having romance, and I was aware something was desperately wrong, said Ms. Carroll.

She testified at trial that she had long blamed herself for courting Mr. Trump after their chance encounter with the Bergdorfs and allowed him to take her to the lingerie section and the dressing room, where he assaulted her.

When his lawsuit was over and Mr. Trump, said Ms. Carroll that tomorrow he will explore that part of his life again.
