Donald W. Mathews, 73, of rural Danville, went home to be with the Lord on May 4, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Health Center Hospice house.
Born on June 19, 1949, Donald was the son of Ralph E. and Vera I. Stevenson Mathews. Don graduated from Danville High School with the class of 1967. He also attended Burlington Junior College and Iowa State University. Don cherished those school relationships throughout his life. From a young age Donald was deeply rooted in the Danville community. He helped his parents farm and later took over the management when his father passed away. The farm has recently been transferred to its fifth generation. Don was a founding member of the Des Moines County Corn Growers and the Danville Jaycees. Along the way, he became a member of the boards of Des Moines County Pork Producers, Des Moines County Farm Bureau, Danville Mutual Telephone Company and Jaggar Cemetery. Don started No-till farming in 1979 and spent the rest of his life promoting the benefits of progressive farming. Preserving and providing for the next generation has always been his top priority. Don started at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant during the farm crisis and ended up staying 25 years.
Hobbies took over more after Don retired. He was a member of both the 3 Rivers and Big Creek tractor clubs. He participated in many tractorcades and rides of all sizes throughout Eastern Iowa. Don was an avid performer with the Midwest Old Threshers, who cherished his participation in the parades and daily cavalcade of power. He is looking forward to the 2023 reunion as Allis Chalmers is the featured tractor. Don was almost always present at events at Danville High School and was especially devoted to boys’ and girls’ basketball. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge with the school’s FFA chapter and was a member of 4-H herself. Most of all, Don enjoyed the connections and friends he made wherever he went.
Most of all, Don loved his family. Don and Cindy were married in August of 1982 and together they raised Cora (Steve) Beltramea of Fairfield, Jessica (Justin) Boecker of Danville, and David (Alaina) Mathews of Danville. Don and Cindy have four grandchildren. Don always had his camera close at hand, resulting in a collection of memories to be shared with generations to come. He can fix almost anything, is always supportive and has patience as wide as the sun. His vast knowledge, big hugs and thumbs up will be greatly missed.
A joyful celebration of life for Don Mathews is planned for May 26th (5/26/23) from 3-6 pm at Elliott Chapel in New London, the family will receive friends throughout the area. This date was chosen specifically because there was no other more appropriate for a man who loved his community of Danville, Iowa (52623) so much. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hadden and Danielle at Family Medicine, the ALS clinic at the University of Iowa, and the very kind staff at SEIRMC Hospice, especially his nurse Dawn.
