Donald Trump news: Former president loses Utah independent voters over indictments: Poll

Donald Trump lost a majority of independent voters in Utah after he was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying campaign records.

The poll conducted by the Deseret News and the Hinckley Institute of Politics was conducted among 800 registered voters from April 25-28. Respondents were asked about how allegations of a 2016 scandal involving the payment of hush money to a pornography actress affected their willingness to vote for the former president. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all 34 federal charges.

The poll found that 51% of independent voters were more likely to vote for Trump, while 30% reported that the impeachment did not change their vote, and 18% were more likely to vote for him. Meanwhile, 31% of Republicans said they were more likely to vote for him, 41% said no change, and 28% said they were more likely. When all registered voters’ answers are taken into account, 33% are more likely, 34% are indifferent, and 23% are more likely.

Utah voters went for Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections. The poll also asked whether respondents thought the charges were politically motivated and found 78% of Republicans and 49% of independent voters agreed, including 16% of Democrats.

Following that, 38% of Republicans suggest Trump did nothing wrong, another 28% say he intentionally acted illegally, and 24% say it was unintentional. Meanwhile, 91% believed Trump acted illegally, but 6% thought it was accidental, and 1% said he did nothing wrong. Independent voters sided more with Democrats, as 51% thought his actions were intentional, while 15% said the opposite, and 22% believed he did nothing wrong.

This poll comes after Trump’s lead over Gov. narrowed by 10 percentage points. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in a poll from Yahoo News/YouGov in mid-April.
