What is Donald Trump doing now? Donald Trump’s lawyers in the classified documents case gave a doozy of an excuse for the president’s alleged misconduct with classified papers in February.

On February 10, the Trumps’ lawyers handed over an empty folder to the Department of Justice labeled Classified Evening Summary.

The explanation for this submission is that Donald Trump used the folder to cover the landline light in his bedroom that kept him up at night.

Yes, what you read is correct.

Did Donald Trump Really Do That?

This explanation is doubtful and even funny. This shows that Trump may not be taking the situation seriously.

Even one of the Trumps lawyers, Timothy Parlatore, said that this discovery is one of the funnier aspects of this whole thing and that there is nothing illegal about it.

Documents are Cool to Keep

Trump has called similar materials in the past a cool keepsake and said their presence around Mar-a-Lago was accidental without criminal intent.

The Laptop Was Given To Investigators

Another submission is noteworthy. The Associated Press reported a few months ago that Trump’s legal team also turned over a laptop belonging to a presidential staffer. It is unclear what types of material are stored on this computer.

The Guardian said an aide for one of Trump’s political action committees may have scanned hard copies of classified documents into electronic PDF copies.

These files are believed to be presidential schedules that could be itineraries for trips to sensitive areas of the world such as Afghanistan.

The Folder Is Not Really Classified

The Trumps’ lawyers also stated that the Classified Evening Summary folder was not marked Secret or Top Secret and did not have a formal classified designation. The folders were accidentally mixed with unclassified material, they said. Both sides of the legal issue are becoming more contentious as investigators believe Trump is stonewalling the documents and his legal team thinks they are cooperating.

It Lasted Almost Two Years

The saga has been ongoing since May 2021 when the National Archives and Records Administration first demanded that Trump hand over the missing classified documents. Twelve months later, Trump was issued a subpoena. Then in June, the Trump camp said it was not in possession of any classified documents.

On August 8, using a search warrant from Attorney General Merrick Garland, the FBI searched the Trumps’ Mar-a-Lago residence. Investigators found 103 classified documents in that search.

In December, a separate company hired by Trump to conduct the search looked at a storage center in West Palm Beach. This company found at least two documents that they turned over to the FBI.

What’s Really Going On Here?

It is difficult to decipher this classified document scandal. Does Trump have more secret material? His main lawyer finds the situation funny. They may use a computer to scan documents. Why would a staff member do that? Especially if they are schedules?

The only thing I can think of is that Trumps staff wants to help the former president write his memoirs in the future and having some classified material will help Trump remember what he did every day.

This Is Not a Way to Endear Yourself to the DOJ

The special counsel and the Justice Department are likely growing increasingly frustrated with Trump. This whole saga takes time. One of the folders was used as a lampshade? This is hard to believe and shows that Trump’s lawyers are probably playing tricks on the investigators.

It will only make things more hostile. On the other hand, President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence have allowed the FBI to search their homes.

Perhaps Trump’s entire legal strategy is to prolong the process and reveal the documents slowly, so that the matter remains out of the public eye.

But you’ll see tight reporting on this scandal as journalists, especially those on the left, smell weakness that could result in criminal charges being brought against Trump.

They won’t buy the excuses that classified folders were used to cover the lights on the phones.
