Chris Sununu says Donald Trump is a ‘loser’ who has lost many times

Gov said Chris Sununu (R-NH) said the strongest case against former President Donald Trump winning the 2024 Republican nomination is that “he’s a loser.”

“I’ve seen a lot of candidates try to debate him on policy. Look, you don’t debate Donald Trump on policy. The guy has massive insecurities. He’s a loser, and he’s lost many times. He’s lost on race in New Hampshire, not just for himself, but for my fellow candidates,” Sununu said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki.

“If you don’t win in November, you shouldn’t be in the discussion,” Sununu said on Sunday.

Sununu has long maintained that Trump is a drag on the GOP throughout the 2018, 2020, and 2022 election cycles. Other potential rivals to Trump, such as former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), expressed similar concerns.

The New Hampshire governor is mulling a potential presidential run and has indicated he will make a decision within the coming weeks. Trump famously bulldozed through a slate of 16 Republican primary opponents in 2016 who tried to match him on policy and character.

“You think the best argument is that he’s a loser,” asked host Jen Psaki.

“Yes,” added Sununu.

Polls show Trump running tight against President Joe Biden, who is widely expected to be the Democratic standard bearer. Right now, Trump is trailing Biden by 0.7 percentage points in the latest RealClearPolitics composite.

Notably, this includes a recent ABC-Washington Post poll showing Trump with a six-point lead. Some described that as an outlier.

Sununu also reviewed his positions on key issues such as abortion, stating his opposition to a national ban; gun control, proving his support for the Second Amendment; and the debt ceiling, warning that default would be “catastrophic.”

“We don’t have a debate yet. In fact, we don’t have a debate for the next two or three months,” Sununu said, stressing that it is still early in the 2024 cycle. “I think there’s just one big opportunity and more political games to play for the candidates.”
