Luke Donald has ruled out any possibility of a ‘captain’s deal’ with Zach Johnson over how the two teams could include LIV players in their Ryder Cup sides.
European stalwarts Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson have all resigned from the DP World Tour, following further penalties on players who entered LIV Golf events without permission, meaning no that they deserve to be featured in the biennial contest.
LIV players can still represent Team Europe in Rome this September, if they remain members of the DP World Tour, while the PGA of America – which controls eligibility for Team USA – still keeps the who resigned from the PGA Tour for this year’s tournament.

“I think in terms of what Zach is doing and his options, I think that’s kind of his call,” Donald said in his press conference before the PGA Championship. “Whether LIV players will play in his team, again, I haven’t talked to him much about it as a captains’ agreement.
“Let’s not forget that there are still LIV players who can still play in my team. They are still eligible if they are members of [DP World] Tour and born in Europe. That is still a possibility for some men.

“I think the team’s choices should be pretty separate. I’m in charge of the European team and what’s best for us, and he’s in charge of the USA Team and what’s best for him. I think , that’s what it should be.”
The resignations of the DP World Tour of some of the most successful European players in the history of the Ryder Cup also dictate them to the next editions of the event, where Donald is focused on building a team that aims to regain the trophy in Italy.

“It’s a shame that there are resignations,” added Donald. “A lot of these guys have built their legacy around the members of the DP World Tour and their involvement and everything in the Ryder Cup.
“Ultimately that’s their decision, and unfortunately they’re off the table right now for selection purposes for myself.
“I’ve always tried to concentrate on seeing all the players that week, week out focused on trying and doing that Ryder Cup, and that hasn’t changed. My situation is what it is. I always have to take if what’s in front of me and move forward a bit.”

Who will impress at the PGA Championship?
Donald will likely need a number of Ryder Cup debutants to complete his team, with the Englishman – who is in the field for this week’s PGA Championship – keen to see how his prospective rookies perform at Oak Hill and the rest majors.
“I probably won’t go into names, but I think it’s always good to see how potential rookies do in the majors,” Donald explained. “A different kind of mindset is needed, a different kind of nerve.

“Obviously the challenge is very different to what you want to play week in, week out. Obviously a very strong field this week. So again, a good performance here in a major can go a long way .
“There’s been a lot of really good rookies and Ryder Cup players who probably haven’t had the best major record, as well. It’s not all of them, but I’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on the scoring.”
