Some of those types raise money just for themselves, which seems to point to Mr Trump, who faced criticism during the midterm elections for sitting on large sums of money on his political action committee.

Mr DeSantis is proud of his success as governor of Florida, describing his achievements on environmental issues and education as a great work team.

When we say something will be done, we will do it, and do it, he said of his approach to the state.

Mr Trump is currently running about 30 percentage points ahead of Mr DeSantis in national polls, but Mr DeSantis will be the strongest challenger to date if he enters the race.

Mr. DeSantis said on the call that he does not view the polls as definitive, adding that he has started as an underdog in other political races and reached the top spot.

His re-election in 2022 ended with him having a higher margin of victory than the polls had predicted.

Mr DeSantis has several endorsements from state legislators in Iowa and New Hampshire, which are heavily influential in primary elections, as well as from his home state.
