A top lawyer for former President Donald Trump is walking away from his legal defense efforts, blaming Mr Trump’s top aide Boris Epshteyn for allegedly being dishonest and disloyal in his work to help former the president’s lawyer in his defense against an investigation into whether he kept classified documents illegally.

His exit came as the National Archives announced it had found a trove of records proving Donald Trump and his advisers knew they were breaking rules by bringing classified documents to Mar-a -Lago, according to a report.

The agency sent a letter, obtained by CNN, to Mr Trump this week showing it had found 16 records showing he and his top advisers were aware of the proper declassification process when he was president.

The 16 records in question reflect all communications involving the president’s close advisers, some of which were directed to you personally, regarding whether, why, and how you should declassify certain classified records, writes archivist Debra Steidel Wall.

These records will be given to Special Counsel Jack Smith as part of the criminal investigation into Mr Trump’s handling of classified documents.

One of Donald Trump’s lawyers, Timothy Parlatore, quit the former president’s legal team and in a statement on Saturday, accused a top adviser to Mr Trump of being dishonest.

In an interview with CNN, he said Mr Trumps aide Boris Epshteyn was stonewalling members of the legal team and preventing them from adequately defending the former president against an investigation into whether he illegally retained classified documents.

The real reason is that some individuals made the defense of the president more difficult than necessary, Mr Parlatore said on Saturday. There was an individual working for him, Boris Epshteyn, who really did everything he could to try to hinder us, to prevent us from doing what we could to defend the president.
