E. Jean Carroll adds to Donald Trump’s post-verdict comments in the pending defamation case

Attorneys for a columnist who won a $5 million sexual harassment and defamation award against former President Donald Trump filed an amended lawsuit against him Monday seeking to hold him accountable for statements he made. after the verdict.

The amended lawsuit, which seeks at least $10 million in damages, was filed in Manhattan federal court by attorneys for E. Jean Carroll, who said Trump’s statements after he made rape allegations against her reputation was so damaged that she lost her longtime job as an Elle magazine advise columnist.

A nine-person jury two weeks ago decided that Trump sexually abused Carroll at an upscale Manhattan department store in early spring 1996.

Carroll, who testified during the trial, first revealed in a book in 2019 her claims that Trump had raped her in a dressing room, but a jury rejected that claim.

Joe Tacopina, a Trump lawyer, declined to comment on the new claims.

Kaplan filed the new claims in an amendment to a defamation lawsuit that has been put on hold while an appeals court decides whether Trump can be held liable for statements he made in 2019 while he was still president. The US Department of Justice backed his lawyers who said the United States should be substituted as a defendant.

In the new claim, the Carrolls’ lawyers say Trump, undeterred by the jury’s verdict, continued to maliciously defame Carroll again the next day during a town hall event hosted by CNN.

He doubled down on his earlier defamatory statements, insisting to an audience ready to cheer him on that I had never met this woman. I have never seen this woman, that she did not sexually assault Carroll, and that her account that was just validated by a jury of Trump associates the other day is a fake, made up story made up by a whack job. Those remarks resulted in enthusiastic cheers and applause from the live TV audience, the lawyers wrote.
