DeSantis said he would consider pardoning the defendants on Jan. 6, along with Trump

Florida Gov. said. Ron DeSantis (R) said Thursday that if elected president, he would consider pardoning all defendants on Jan. 6 — including former President Trump — on his first day in office.

“On day one, I’m going to have people come together and look at all these cases, that people are victims of weaponization or political targeting, and we’re going to be aggressive in issuing those pardon,” DeSantis said on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” podcast when asked about whether he would consider pardoning the defendants on Jan. 6, including Trump, who is currently facing a federal investigation into his role on January 6.

“I would say any example of disfavored treatment based on politics, or weaponization would be included in that review, no matter how small or how big,” he added.

DeSantis also accused the Justice Department and the FBI of overreaching its authority by continuing investigations into the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The Justice Department said earlier this month that 1,033 arrests were made in connection with the attacks on the Capitol and about 485 people were sentenced for criminal activity carried out that day.

DeSantis also said the FBI is targeting anti-abortion groups, as well as parents who want to attend school board meetings. He said that if elected, his administration would decide on a “case-by-case” basis whether the government is armed against certain groups.

“We will look for examples where the government has been weaponized against disfavored groups, and we will apply relief where appropriate, but it will be done on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

DeSantis officially launched his bid for the White House on Wednesday night, where it was met with a variety of technical problems and glitches on the Twitter livestream. DeSantis has consistently trailed Trump in second place in recent polls as the former president has stepped up his attacks on the governor.
