Mike Pence: Donald Trump Shouldn’t Be President Again But I Can Still Support Him

Donald Trump is a fake conservative and a traitor to the Constitution. That’s the message in a new ad from a super PAC aligned with Mike Pence, an all-out attack on the former president and outlawed 2024 favorite who is rare among Republican contenders.

Amid a montage of images showing Trump supporters storming the Capitol, a narrator can be heard referring to Trump as a weak man who pleaded with Pence to ignore the Constitution in his bid to retain power. Pence was hailed as a man of courage and character who stood up to a mob that wanted to kill him, then the place accused Trump of failing the test of leadership that day and beyond. (Actually, Pence’s Jan. 6 paper wasn’t exactly a bravery profile.) Since then, this so-called leader has continued to abandon our conservative principles, the ad continues, referring to Trump’s rejection of the antiabortion advocate.

The Committed to America PAC ad, which is part of a $250,000 media buy and will air in Iowa over the next two weeks, also makes allusions to the rights raging culture war. Now, with an awakened mob trying to take away our freedom, the narrator declares in a photo of transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, we need a president who will not be swayed, who will not try to cut deals with our cherished president when have courage and faith to guide us through troubled times.

Bobby Saparow, the executive director of Committed to America, used the release of the ads to differentiate his candidate PACs from other Republicans seeking the nomination. During his campaign kickoff address Wednesday, Pence made comments about his old boss. When Donald Trump ran for president in 2016, he promised to govern as a conservative, and we did that together, he said. Today, he makes no such promise. At one point Pence even tried to isolate Trump from the broader movement. The antiabortion cause, he said, was a core part of conservatism even before Donald Trump became a part of it. Now he views it as a nuisance, even blaming the 2022 election defeats on overturning Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, regarding Trump’s actions on January 6, Pence concluded that he should not be president of the United States again.

However, not long after, Pence said in an interview with Fox News that he would support the Republican nominee, which could be Trump. Later, in a CNN town hall, Pence urged the Justice Department not to prosecute Trump for his handling of classified documents and did not rule out pardoning his former boss if he were convicted of a crime. I don’t want to talk about hypotheticals, Pence said about pardons. I’m not sure I’ll be elected president of the United States, but I believe we have a fighting chance.

Of course, the odds of Pence beating Trump in the primary contest are slim. A compilation of Republican primary polls puts his support at about 5% nationwide, according to FiveThirtyEight, while early voting in Iowa and New Hampshire has him in the low single digits.
