Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Condemn Donald Trump with Air Monologue for Campaign Video

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are condemning the recent use of an Air monologue being used to promote Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. On the Truth Social platform, Trump shared a video promoting his 2024 campaign featuring video clips of himself and his followers cheering him on. The footage plays audio of Damon delivering a powerful speech from Air. The post got a lot of attention and was shared on other social media platforms.

Now, Affleck and Damon are speaking out against the ad, making it clear they’re not endorsing Trump or his campaign. Affleck, who directed the film and co-stars with Damon, released a joint statement saying they had no knowledge that audio from Air would be used for the Trump video. The two are also demanding that the Trump campaign refrain from using anything from Air to promote his campaign going forward, saying the former president does not have permission to do so.

“We have no foreknowledge of, do not consent to and do not endorse or approve any footage or audio from the Air that is reused by the Trump campaign as a political advertisement or for any other use,” the statement said, per Deadline. “In particular in terms of any and all rights available to us under US copyright and intellectual property law, we hereby expressly give notice that in the case of any use of material from Air of the Trump campaign where approval or consent is required, we do not provide such consent.”

In the film, Damon plays Nike marketer Sonny Vaccaro, and the film details the origins of the popular Air Jordan shoe line created in collaboration with NBA legend Michael Jordan. A monologue from Damon’s Sonny, used for Trump’s promo, explains how success must be earned, no matter how much money one has.

“Money can buy almost anything… it can’t buy immortality. You have to earn it,” he said. “We need you in these shoes, not for you to make sense of your life, but for us to make sense of ours.”

It was originally slated for a streaming-only release on Prime Video, but it was moved to also have a theatrical release after test screenings were overwhelming. But while he can stream the movie at home all he wants, Trump needs to avoid using any footage or audio from the movie for any additional ads, or he could be in legal trouble with Affleck and Damon.
