Duluth, MN – Donald Edward Marpe, 99, died June 9, 2023, in Duluth, MN. Born on April 27, 1924 to August and Lillian Marpe in St. Paul, MN.

After graduating from Isle High School, Isle, MN, Donald enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served from 1942-45 (Asiatic-Pacific medal earned with 2 battle stars) and from 1950-51 during the Korean War.

Donald married Ellen Hambleton on May 30, 1947, and together they raised 5 children. Donald graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1957 with a degree in electrical engineering and enjoyed a productive career, retiring from MTS Systems Corp. in Eden Prairie, MN, in 1986.

A longtime member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, he served on various boards and in various capacities. His interests are wide-ranging; including teaching and organizing youth sports, getting his pilot’s license, and frequent trips to the BWCA. He was an avid reader and book collector, and even did a stint in the Coast Guard Auxiliary after moving to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, where he and Ellen built a log home for their retirement.

Preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Carol Nelson.

Survived by brother Wayne (Faye); wife of 76 years, Ellen; children Kathleen Larson, Karen Zutler, Joel (Diane), Ramona (Ron) Hutton, and Tim (Beth); along with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Dougherty of Duluth, Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Peace In Christ Lutheran Church, 5007 Maple Grove Rd., Hermantown MN. Visitation at 1:00 pm, service at 2:00 pm.
