Bills safety Jordan Poyer has canceled his charity golf tournament, originally scheduled for July, but he wants fans to know it wasn’t his decision.

Many sponsors and teams dropped out of the tournament because of its location: the Blue Monster course at Trump National Doral Miami, owned by former president Donald Trump.

“I was really excited for this tournament,” Poyer said in a 12-minute video posted on Instagram, saying the Blue Monster is one of his favorite courses.

Poyer said people wrote to Buffalo hospital ECMC asking it to pull out of the event. While Poyer identified ECMC as one of the tournament’s biggest sponsors, the hospital said it is only set to be a beneficiary of the event. In a statement, ECMC said it was “fortunate to be the beneficiary of Jordan Poyer’s golf tournament” but did not rule out quitting.

The Pro Bowl safety said he was grateful to ECMC and didn’t blame them but apparently called out the people who forced the company to leave.

“It seems like our egos get in the way of being a good person,” Poyer said, adding that ego is “a big thing that’s wrong with America.”

While Poyer admitted he may not agree politically with everything Trump believes, he said, “I still go and put my ego aside to help those in need.”

Poyer continued, arguing that people need to put aside differences and talk about real issues that affect others. “I want to say the quiet parts out loud,” Poyer told her Instagram followers.

This is set to be Poyer’s second consecutive charity golf tournament. He hosted the Celebrity Open in July at Coral Ridge Country Club in Florida, but this year’s new location ruffled some feathers.

Events hosted at Trump-owned golf courses have caused some controversy over the years, though the embattled former president has hosted several tournaments at LIV Golf and even made a an appearance at a LIV Golf event at his Washington DC-area course in May.

If there’s one takeaway from Poyer’s announcement, however, it’s that he doesn’t blame Trump for this decision.
