Donald Trump cruises to victory at the Tric Awards and heaps praise on Nigel Farage

Donald Trump was the first to congratulate GB News host Nigel Farage after he won News Presenter of the Year at the 2023 Tric Awards.

Farage stunned the television industry when he won the award in a public vote ahead of category finalists Piers Morgan, Susanna Reid and his fellow GB News colleagues, Eamonn Holmes and Stephen Dixon.

The former US president, who Farage interviewed twice for the channel, said: Congratulations to Nigel. He is absolutely incredible in what he does and says. Everyone listens the respect is long and deep.

One Twitter user wrote: “Congratulations. I was one of the many who voted for you. Thanks for keeping the truth out there.”

Another said: “Congratulations Nigel! Its about time you got some recognition. Well deserved.”

While a third added: “Well done, Nigel! They sent the censors to shut you down! Unbelievable!”

For the first time, this year the winners in 17 categories were chosen entirely by the public.

Previous awards have been voted on in a 60:40 split between the industry and the audience.

The former Brexit Party leader was joined by top executives and talent present at the awards as he called for reform in the way British television audiences are measured.

Addressing the baying audience, Farage said: You screamers, think about this. There is a big gap in the broadcast market.

You have been too consistent. And that’s where GB News comes in. What is being done is creating a new and fresh brand in British broadcasting. When we overcome the problem of consciousness, it becomes a great force.

Farage’s critique of the Barb system for measuring TV audiences was a moment of particular frustration for the outraged crowd, who were heard shouting rubbish.

The TRIC awards were more hotly contested than ever this year with more than 130,000 voters, compared to 66,000 last year and in total, more than 1.3m votes were cast.

Farage said: The approval of your audience is the highest award. GB News has set out to be the Peoples Channel and I am proud of that. The establishment media does not always like it is not for them but this award shows that people can.

He added: In politics, the art of constructive debate is being lost, but it is important. For me, good news and current affairs is about bringing people together with very different opinions, and then having a warm, mature conversation with them.
