Trump, allies anger McCarthy over Sunday show slip-up, ask him to delete fundraising emails: report

Former President Donald Trump and his allies are reportedly furious with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy after the California Republican said on a Sunday show that he’s not sure if Trump is the best candidate to defeat President Biden.

“Can he win that election? Yes, he can win that election,” McCarthy told CNBC. “The question: Is he the strongest to win the election? I don’t know the answer to that.”

McCarthy personally called Trump to apologize earlier this week, saying he simply misspoke during the interview, according to The New York Times. As a further apology, McCarthy’s staff sent out donation requests declaring that “Trump is Biden’s STRONGEST opponent!”

However, this has done little to ease tensions, as Trump and his team are notoriously protective of the Trump brand, requiring Republicans to obtain permission before using him in fundraising. As a result, McCarthy’s office soon received demands that they cancel the fundraiser, blasted to supporters via text and email, according to Politico.
