Republican Governor Taunts Donald Trump About ‘Wimp Out’ Primary Debate

New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu laughed as he mocked Donald Trump and called him a “wimp” if he refused to attend the upcoming Republican presidential primary debates.

Sununu spoke with Fox News’ Sandra Smith on Monday as the pair reflected on the state of the Republican presidential primary race.

At this stage, the GOP presidency is especially crowded with many Republicans vying for the top job. Especially former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Vice President Mike Pence and former former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

In March, Sununu said that Ron DeSantis would win his state if the election were held today and also concluded that Trump would not end up as the Republican presidential nominee in 2024, Politico reported.

“Former President Trump, the tough guy? The guy who says he’s going to fight for America, but he doesn’t want to stand up, he’s going to lose? Wimp out and not get on the debate stage?” Sununu told Smith, mocking Trump.

Smith noted that at this stage, nothing is known for certain about Trump’s involvement.

Newsweek reached out to Donald Trump via email for comment, but in April, speaking on his social media app, Trump indicated he would not attend the debate, despite holding a large lead in the polls.

“I see that everyone is talking about the Republican Debates, but no one has gotten my approval, or the approval of the Trump Campaign, before announcing them,” Trump said in a Truth Social post on April 25.

“When you’re leading by seemingly insurmountable numbers, and you have a nasty Network with angry, TRUMP & MAGA angry anchors asking ‘questions,’ why subject yourself to being libeled and abused?

“Also, the Second Debate is being held in the Reagan Library, the Chairman of which is, amazingly, Fred Ryan, Publisher of The Washington Post. NO!”

Recent polls have regularly given Trump more than 50 percent support from Republican voters.

His closest competitors trail him by a large margin, with Governor Ron DeSantis the only other candidate with double-digit support, and former Vice President Mike Pence polling in the high single digits.

Last week, Ron DeSantis confirmed that he will participate in the first nationally televised GOP debate scheduled for Milwaukee in August, according to a Florida Phoenix report.

“I’m going to be there, no matter what,” DeSantis said during an interview with Fox News’ Will Cain on Thursday, according to the report.

“I hope that everyone who is eligible will come. I think this is an important part of the process, and I look forward to getting on stage and introducing our candidacy and our vision and our leadership to a wide audience.”

Despite still following Trump in his home state, DeSantis saw an increase in support from Republican voters according to a Florida Atlantic University Mainstreet PolCom Lab poll published Monday.

DeSantis has started to see gains among the 900 registered voters surveyed by pollsters from the state.

Trump still leads DeSantis by about 20 points in the pollster’s analysis but the gap between the two candidates has narrowed by 7 percent since April polling results by PolCom Lab.
