Donald Trump rejects the idea that he didn’t ‘drain the swamp’ in the first term

Former President Donald Trump is pushing back against claims that he failed to “drain the swamp” during his first term in the White House.

Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo told Trump in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures that he “didn’t drain the swamp” like he said he would. Trump denied his claim, saying he “fired” some people.

I fired [former FBI Director James] Comey. I fired a lot of people. There were a lot of people with me, I sent them away. I fired Comey very early. And, you know, there’s the question of whether or not you can. But I fired Comey. If I didn’t fire Comey, I don’t think I would have been able to serve out my term because that was a plot.

Bartiromo asked Trump about his track record in firing staff who later spoke out against him, such as former Attorney General Bill Barr, or former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and what he would do differently if he will get the second term.

The fault is people, Trump said referring to some of his personnel moves. I mean, I’m not going to put a guy like Bill Barr and he’s weak and pathetic. I wouldn’t have put it [former Attorney General] Jeff Sessions. And there were some people I wouldn’t have put. You know, most people are good, but I have some people that we have. [former Secretary of Defense] Mark Esper. I didn’t like him. He is incompetent. I thought there were people I didn’t like.

Why did you put them to work then? asked Bartiromo.

I don’t know the people, Trump said. I know more people now than anyone else. The people I know, the good ones, the bad ones, the dumb ones, the smart ones.

Trump has yet to commit to whether he will attend the first Republican presidential debate, saying he doesn’t need to when he has a big lead over other GOP candidates.

A RealClearPolitics analysis of recent polls shows Trump leading them all, with an average RCP of 53%. He holds a 32.4% lead against Gov. Ron DeSantis, who polled 20.6%.
