Donald Trump’s Challengers Face Watershed Moment as January 6 Impeachment Moves

Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls who have so far not been too critical of Donald Trump may be forced to change course when details emerge about the former president’s alleged January 6 and 2020 election scandal.

Trump said Tuesday that he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office. It told him he was a target in a federal investigation into attempts to subvert the previous election. The investigation is also looking into the events that led to the chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The letter Trump received is a key indication that the former president is facing another criminal charge while running for the office of the White House.

Trump, the early frontrunner in the GOP presidential primary, accused the investigation of “election interference” while attacking Smith as “crazy.” Several news outlets, citing the unmanned source family involved in the matter, reported that Trump could be accused of various offenses related to conspiracy to defraud the United States, violation of rights , and tampering with a witness, victim or an informant. In support, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a 2024 hopeful, said at a campaign event in New Hampshire that the former president was a victim of the “weapon” of the Department of Justice.

This claim was answered by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who criticized the DOJ and the FBI and threatened to cut the salaries of the two agencies’ staff to zero. The powerful Republican told the Eric Bolling the Balance show on Newsmax on July 12 that the American people do not trust the DOJ and FBI and that they are “politically weaponized.”

And businessman and investor Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 GOP primary candidate backing Trump, reiterated his vow to pardon those convicted in connection with the Jan. 6 attack if elected president, along with Trump.

However, after the apparent appearance of the targeted letter, some major GOP 2024 candidates, such as former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, spoke out against Trump and asked him to leave him in the race.

Former federal prosecutor and MSNBC legal analyst Joyce Vance wrote on Twitter that, once the latest rumored indictment against Trump is unsealed, some Republican 2024 hopefuls may decide to start strongly condemning the former president’s actions to strengthen their appeal to the general public.

“Prediction: Jack Smith’s evidence, or what we see here in his indictment, will be stronger than people expect,” Vance tweeted. “The GOP presidential candidates who continue to campaign for Trump will be forced to do about-face, maybe not right away, but it’s coming.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has long been considered Trump’s biggest challenger in the 2024 GOP primary. For months he has not responded to a series of attacks aimed at him by the former president, although his criticism has become more vocal since he officially launched his White House bid in late May.

Speaking at a campaign event in South Carolina, DeSantis said Trump “must come out stronger” to tell his supporters to end the violence on Jan. 6. However, the Florida governor added that any suggestion that the former president will face charges because of them. actions are a “separate issue.” DeSantis also recently told CNN that he doesn’t believe it would be “good for the country” if Trump is criminally charged in connection with the Capitol riots.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley served as ambassador to the United Nations under Trump. He offered more direct criticism of the former president amid claims he received a targeted letter from federal prosecutors.

Speaking on Fox News, Haley said Trump, who has pleaded not guilty in the Smith classified documents case and in New York to falsification allegations in business records, was becoming too much of a “distraction.”

“The rest of this primary election is going to be about Trump: it’s about lawsuits; it’s about legal fees; it’s about judges; and it’s going to continue to be more and more. distraction ,” Haley said.

“And that’s why I am running, is because we need a new generational leader. We can’t keep dealing with this drama,” Haley added.

Christie, a former Trump ally in the GOP, used a targeted letter to go after Trump again, as the former New Jersey governor has often done in his 2024 campaign.

“As a former prosecutor, I want to see any potential indictment before I discuss the case against Donald Trump. That said, let me be clear: his behavior on January 6th proves nothing he cares about our country and our Constitution,” Christie tweeted.

“He lost the election and instead of accepting it he tried to overturn the election, undermine democracy and provoke January 6. His lies have consequences. We lost the midterms and we will be gone in 2024.”

Hutchinson is another GOP 2024 candidate who hasn’t shied away from attacking Trump. He called on the frontrunner to “immediately” suspend his campaign while he faces charges related to the January 6 investigation.

“While Donald Trump wants the American people to believe that he is the victim in this situation, the truth is that the real victims of January 6th are our democracy, our rule of law, and the officials of the Capitol of the Police who worked valiantly to protect our Capitol,” Hutchinson said in a statement. “Anyone who truly loves this country and is willing to put the country on their own would immediately suspend their campaign for President of the United States. It’s disappointing that Donald Trump refuses to do this.”

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd also delivered a scathing attack on Trump amid claims he is facing a new indictment.

“January 6th was a dark day for democracy. Trump’s inaction then, and now being a target of investigation, proves he is unfit for office,” Hurd tweeted. “Our country deserves leaders who will put the Constitution and the American people first.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence, whose relationship with Trump soured after the Jan. 6 attack, has yet to publicly comment on the seemingly threatening accusation. Other potential 2024 GOP primary hopefuls, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez or North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, also did not speak.
