Obituary for Donald A. Marsden

Donald Allen Marsden passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023.

Donald was born on January 23, 1941 to Frank and Kathleen (Silbaugh) Marsden in Beloit, Wisconsin. He graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in June of 1959. Shortly after graduation, Donald enlisted in the United States Navy on October 19, 1959 and served for 4 years before being honorably discharged with a good conduct medal.

Donald is married to Gretchen (Zimmerman) Marsden and has 2 children, Dale (with grandchildren, Joshua, Jennifer, Lauren and Jonathan) and Bryan (with grandchildren Amber, Dean and Samantha, and grandchildren great-grandchildren Ethan, Henry, and Sophie).

He later married his wife Cindy in October 1995. She passed away on April 25, 2019.

Don spent time in California working for McDonald Douglas Aircraft before returning to Wisconsin where he worked in the manufacturing industry and managed an antique store (his lifelong hobby).

Friends and family describe Don as a “salt of the Earth” man. He was a good man, a gentle soul, with a kind and generous heart. He loves spending his time playing cards with his family, taking care of life and just spending time with the people he loves. His collection of fire truck memorabilia used to be the largest in the state of WI and even included a real fire truck! His service through the Lions Club brought him a lot of recognition, even though he didn’t want it. He and Cindy lived in Rockford, IL for most of their married life.

Don was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Frank (Sue) Marsden, George (Wilma) Marsden, Jim Marsden and his sister, Sally. She is survived by her children, Dale (Laurie) Marsden and Bryan (Ann) Marsden, their children and grandchildren; brothers, Jack (Sharon) Marsden of Wapakoneta, OH, and Mike (Karen) Marsden of Appleton, WI; sisters-in-law, Marietta Marsden of Criderville, OH, and Kathy Hudson of Jefferson, WI; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Anskar’s Episcopal Church in Rockford, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Mercy Hospice or the Beloit Lions Club. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amberwood Care Center and Mercy Hospice for their unwavering kindness and care.
