Trump Dodges Question About His Christian Beliefs at Iowa Town Hall

Former President Donald Trump appeared to avoid answering a question about his faith during a Fox News town hall last week.

An Iowa woman asked Trump how his faith has grown since he first ran for president and asked who had mentored him on his “faith journey.”

“I’ve seen so much heartache and turmoil. I was a developer, and I did other things, and you know I had a wonderful, I had a beautiful life before all this stuff. I didn’t know what a grand jury w. I didn’t know what a subpoena what a subpoena?” Trump replied.

He went on to say he was “so happy” he decided to run for president because “I’ve made America great. We can do it again. Right now, we are not a great country.”

Truman added that he has met evangelicals because of his presidency and prominent evangelists Franklin Graham and Paula White have name-checked.

“I know so many people, and they feel so good about themselves and their family, and they base it on religion,” he said.

“I know so many people that are so incredible, religious people, and not just Christians, not just evangelicals.”

Trump then shifted focus to how FI made Catholics the “enemy,” and asked how Catholics could specifically vote for a Democrat or Biden.

Despite his ambiguity regarding his faith, Trumps, who is one of the frontrunners for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has long been embraced by religious figures in the US.

Trump was confirmed as a Presbyterian as a child but said during his presidency that he identified as a “non-denominational Christian.”

The former president maintains a strong base of support among evangelicals, who have credited him with various conservative victories, including a Supreme Court decision to overturn federal abortion protections.

Earlier this year, former Vice-President Mike Pence mocked Trump’s religious devotion during his remarks at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Pence joked that he “once invited President Trump to a Bible study,” calling it “an experience,” according to The Washington Post. Pence is well known as a deeply religious evangelical Christian.

“He really liked the quotes about hurting and dying your enemies. Like he said, ‘You know Mike, there’s some really good stuff in there,'” Pence said, doing a verbal impression of the former president.

“Which reminds me. I read that some of the classified documents they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president’s Bible,” Pence said, referring to the ongoing saga of the Trump investigations. “Which proves he had no idea they were there.”
