Obituary | Donald Boyd of New Sharon, Iowa

Don Boyd, 93 of Homestead Assisted Living and formerly of New Sharon passed away Monday morning, July 24, 2023 at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. Memorial services will begin at 1:00 pm Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Lighthouse Church in New Sharon. A coffeetime/visitation will be held immediately after the service in the fellowship hall of the church. A private burial will be held at Union Mills Cemetery in Union Mills. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Church to be used for future missions or Child Evangelism Fellowship “CEF”. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.

George Donald Boyd, the son of Lloyd and Fern (Taylor) Boyd, was born on February 26, 1930 in Taintor, Iowa. He attended Granville Country School and graduated from New Sharon High School in 1947. Don enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 serving in Ohio and Hawaii before being honorably discharged in 1953. On July 5, 1951, Don was united in marriage to Sherill Harter in New Sharon. To this union were born six children, Richard, Lori, Jill, Jan, Steve and Mary. Don farmed in the New Sharon area and worked at the Veteran’s Medical Center in Knoxville as a supplier for 28 years. He was a member of Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446 of New Sharon and a member of Light House Church in New Sharon for over 72 years where he served on several boards. He also served on the Christian Opportunity Board, New Sharon City Council, Prairie Homes Board and Taintor COOP Board. He enjoyed riding, traveling, playing ping pong and was a “treasure” collector.

His legacy will be preserved by his wife of 72 years, Sherill; his children, Lori (Roger) Soppe, Jill (Kerry) Lake, Jan (Mike) Broerman, Steve Boyd and Mary (Alan Schneider) Brand; a daughter-in-law, Janet Boyd; 13 grandchildren and spouses, 35 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard Boyd; a granddaughter, Niccole Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Debra Boyd and a brother, Lyle Boyd.
